LEGO City 7939 Cargo Train
The LEGO City Cargo Train is a behemoth! This 839-piece set (No. 7939) marks a new era in brickset rail history. The LEGO Cargo Train uses the same power functions available to one of it’s predecessor (the Emerald Night), adds a brand spanking new motor, updated battery box, and a 4-channel, 7-speed infrared remote control. It’s the biggest LEGO train set out there at the moment.

You’d expect big things from a LEGO set that carries a higher price tag. Fortunately, this cargo train carries some pretty extensive accessories. You could base a whole day around putting this one together and getting it up and running! It’s a very satisfying build with plenty of variety to keep both kids and adults engaged. The set comes with a train, crane with fully working winch and rotating chair, 3 wagons, and 2 cars. And of course, track pieces.
The LEGO Cargo Train’s main engine is a stunner and is arguably the set’s outstanding feature. The bright yellow locomotive houses the battery box but still manages to be both functional and attractive. The driver’s cab flips open for easy access, as do the grey side doors. No attention to detail has been spared on the roof, either. The 4 circular grille hatches and power line coupling give it a realistic touch.
The Octan tanker wagon is also worthy of note, with details including little steps for the driver to access the opening hatch on top. There’s also a flammable safety badge on the side, which is a nice touch.
Now for the minifigures. There are 4 in total: 1 train driver and 3 freight yard employees. The driver is traditionally decked out in rather old-fashioned gear; blue overalls, matching peaked hat, and a red scarf. Two of the freight workers have orange vests with reflective silver strips, whilst the third is in overalls with tools in the pocket. All have different expressions, with glasses and facial hair being used to give them a touch of individuality. No female minifigures though!
You will need 9 x AAA batteries to keep the LEGO Cargo Train running along. Please note that the train is compatible with LEGO 9V tracks. However, the tracks are not compatible with LEGO 9V trains.
Suitable for children aged 5 and up, LEGO City Cargo Train is available for around £129.99.
